the pump was cavatating a bit but once standing up it was fine, not sure if that would cause the issue either. and yes i do have water coming out the side dump and pipe. it does seem skimpy to me but again im a noob
As long as you can put your hand on the exhaust at operating temp and not cook your skin off then you are fine.

The cavitation shouldn't effect it much but could have played a minor role. Keep your weight as far forward as possible when standing or kneeling this will prevent porpoising and keep the pump full of water.
