Default inlet grate theory

what seems to be the theory behind inlet grates seems the inlet on my 94 sl650 is too long. reaching for to far forward of the hull do the aftermarket grates with the fin like this one http://i18.ebayimg.com/05/i/001/05/52/092d_12.JPG help by reducing the size of the inlet?

I just bought one that looks like that one,so i dont know how well the help. The theory from what I understand is that it helps direct water to the pump housing. Like any pump, you wouldnt want to reduce the suction side or inlet. That will cause cavition and could lead to deterioration of the impeller and or pump housing/wear ring.
