Default need help... is my cdi fried?

hi guys i think my relay went bad and fried my cdi by shorting out in my 2002 yamaha 1200 xlt. when i hook the new battery up to the jet ski and plug the lanyard in it doesnt beep or show the screen like it used to. all it says is starting. the relay is bad so it doesnt start. when i try to start it i can here the relay clicking abd there is a noise coming from the cdi box(i have everything all open up). any opinions on what it might be?

Your post is a little confusing. If you know the relay is bad, how can you expect it to start? The clicking is typical of a bad relay. Try jumping the relay (connect the 2 large positive leads). If it starts, you've confirmed a bad relay as the problem. It would be difficult to short out the CDI without blowing the fuse first.

ive blown a fuse once. and if i jump it like that it trys to start for a second and then it shorts out. ive melted the ground terminal off one battery already. if i take the relay completely out of the situation and just jump the starter with a jumper cable it will keep trying to start but it wont start. i also have not heard the fuel pump go on once. ( there is a electronic fuel pump to get the gas to the carbs rite?)

I would check all your connections. Something is not right if it's trying to melt the battery. You have a short someplace. It is now sounding more like you have a bad CDI. I'd replace the relay and swap out the CDI, and not try to keep starting it if it's blowing fuses. You will eventually melt something important.

Have you checked to see if you are getting spark? Pull a plug and crank it with the plug grounded against the engine. If you have spark, next make sure it's getting fuel. There is no fuel pump. The carbs pump the fuel.

i dont have another cdi to swap it out with it. i dont think the problem is anything mechanical it ran like a top before the shorting problems. i think the whole short thing is coming from the relay witch i have another one coming. when i jump the power to the starter it turns over fine. and when it goes threw the relay it shorts out. basically i wanted to know if the ski isnt beeping or showing the screen when i hook the battery up does that mean its a bad cdi?

OK, I'd wait until you get the good relay, then try again. If it turns over, but won't start, check for spark. If no spark then it could be bad temp. sensor, bad CDI, or bad stator. I'd check the temp. sensor, and voltage from the stator before buying a new CDI, since they are expensive.

If you are seeing "START" on the display, then I'm thinking it is probably OK. Once the engine starts, the rest of the display should power up.
