yamaha xl800 has only 40 hourspistons are moving up and down freely when i hand crank the engine from impeller.. but only in the opposite direction its supposed to go .. can only get one turn in correct direction and it locks when pistons are at the highest point and lowest point ..it was cranking fine but i had to change the ware ring as impeller was sticking but now i have above problem even with impeller casing removed any ideas on what could be wrong as it was cranking fine the past few weeks??
if it turns freely in one dirction and the pistons are moving up and down would engine damage not stop it both ways ?? do the seals and gasket have to be replaced to take off the head ?
i am thinking water in the crankcase could be a possiblity .. is this a possible cause ? there was water in the cyliners previously but i blew it out through cranking .. how can i remove water from the crank case ?
spark plugs are out , if the piston was damaged would it not stop rotation in both directions? i am cracking it by hand one direction but its almmost solid the other
My guess is its binding against something broken inside the cylinder. Could be piston catching on exhaust port, etc.. Only way to know is to take it apart at this point.

Another post with similar problem reminded me that you could have lost a powervalve. http://www.pwcforum.com/yamaha-jetsk...xlt-800-a.html They sometimes fall loose unless you had clips installed. If they fall into a cylinder, then you get the same symptoms of it not being able to turn completely.
The bendix on the starter will not prevent rotation either way.
