I have a 2000 Yamaha XL800 that was hard to start at the dock last weekend and once I finally got it started, it would hardly run. The motor would not wind out when we got it on the river. It acts like it is running out of gas or stalling. I took the unit to my local dealer and was told that the ski started right up and they saw nothing wrong, but they do not have anywhere but a small river to test run it and I am to strapped for funds to spend another $75 per hour for them to check it out at the local creek. Any suggestions of what I can check out sure will be appreciated?

Could be reeds, could be carbs, and it could be compression. Prolly not compression probs though.

Whats the history on this engine? Has it been sitting? Or is this something that the engine just started doing and you've been using it all summer?

If this is a sitting issue, check the carbs. If it's something that just "came up" then I'm agreed with Ph2oCraft, check your reeds!

Sounds like sitting to me, when I bought my 95' XI I didn't bother to check the gas before trying to turn it over and paid hell for it. Alot of water had settled to the bottom and fresh-ish gas was on top so it smelled fine, the engine ended up sucking it into the cylinders and as White knows it took me at least two weeks to dry out I'd pull the plugs and see if your plugs are getting moist or nasty before you go tearing into the carb. With mine it would sometimes fire up, dry out the spark plugs then refoul all over untill I drained all the gas out. Either way it sounds like an easy fix Best of luck.
