Default Proper Oil 2002 Polaris Virage PWC

I am looking to buy another polaris PWC and have found one I am interested in. "BUT" When i checked out the machine which is a 2003 Virage 3 cylinder with only 37 hrs on it the guy had only used regular 2 stroke O/B engine oil.
Premium but still just a blue engine oil.
When it started it smoked like crazy but within a few minutes it was normal.
When I drove it it seemed OK but the oil light came on repeatedly even though the oil was filled "actually right to the brim".
He stated he had just changed the battery and that the gage needed to be reset.

Can this damage the engine to the point where I don't risk buying.

Help I need decision quick!

I'm no expert but I heard you should not run regular outboard oil in PWCs. I would probably pass but maybe do a compression check and it all is ok it could be a good deal.
