Yamaha is your best bet for those model years

What is your budget? Unfortunately 98-01 were not the greatest years to buy even a Yamaha 2 stroke. Many of those models had the dreaded power valve problem that Yamaha fixed after 01 (I think, it may have been 02 models that had the fix). Give us an upper price limit, and we can give you some suggestions.

This describes the 1997-99 Yamaha GP1200 to a T. If you do go this route try to get a 98 or 99 as some 97s had weak hulls resulting in cracking when wake jumping.

My budget is a small $3000. I'm still in highschool and I am paying for it all. I just want an affordable toy for the summer. I was looking at a 01 yamaha 1200 ltd for $2800

You mean XLT Limited? That's a nice big 3 seater. For a young guy you should get a sportier 2 seater in my opinion. Good choices are Yamaha GP1200, GP1200r and SeaDoo XP and RX. You can a nice machine for 3 grand.

Here's another I found. He wants $2900

Click the link
99 Yamaha GP1200 waverunner and trailer
Is it good, is Tue price rite, and how is the gauge cluster. Not that the gauges would be the thing that stop me from buying but what would I be looking at when I ride. It doesn't look like they could fit much

The price is high, to put things into perspective I sold my 98 GP1200 at the beginning of last season for $2,000 and it was near mint with just 30 hours on rebuilt motor. What was I thinking I don't know.

Personally if I was buying for myself I would pass on this particular one because he converted it to pre mix and removed the nice factory decals.

If you however don't mind that then go for it. Just that for me pre mix is a huge hassle, not to mention your always fouling plugs, using excessive oil and polluting like a locomotive from 1925. The instrument cluster on these is actually very good, it has two round gauges for speed and tach with features like security lockout, stopwatch, oil level, and a few others. Still looks very modern. In fact when Yamaha replaced the GP with the GPR they cheapened the gauge to just a single round digital tach and speed readout in the center with no extra features.

The sellers got one thing right, "This is the hull everyone wants, it is one of the best designed waverunner hulls, designed for jumping."
