Thanks for your quick response and offer of help. The ski is at my cabin and i'm not there regularly, so updates will be slow but i will keep you posted. I'm gonna try looking at the impeller with flashlight, but considering the noise started just after my S-I-L sucked up the rope I would think it's most likely the driveshaft is bent.
I'm in the NY area and expecting a dealer to loan a service manual is remote. I've been looking thru the net for what i could find and it does not appear too difficult, even pulling the engine does not look like a big deal. From what i've seen wouldn't the drive shaft come thru the front, pulling it out of splined shaft and then thru bearing?
There is a driveshaft available on fleabay i've been keeping my eye on.
