sounds more of jet pump failure to me ....if your refering to the key way on the front of the engine this means that the fly wheel would be out of timing causing the engine to not start or splutter like hell

is the prop spinning could be the splines on the impellor

How would I check for pump failure? I don't believe it's the flywheel spinning, it starts easily no problems and revs just as easy...

your engine seems to be ok if it starts and revs up ........as the prop is a direct drive from your engine the only slippage could be your impellor ......back about 6 months ago there was alot of seeweed in the marina i drove out with no problom but when i revved it the engine would all the way on the tacko but no speed. so i put it back on the trailer found no probloms went back out and tryied it every thing was ok ...my theory was that i sucked in some seeweed and blocking the intake grate but once i switched the engine off it must off let go this making me find no probloms

first thing i would do is to is check impellor and prop for debri if no debri and take to a marina just for a quick test if its still slipping you know you have a problom ...could of just been some thing cought in the intake grate ....if its still sliiping put it on a trailer but still leave it in the water and start it up have a look inside the engine bay and check if you can see any thing abnormal from the engine and pump drive fittings ...

if your impellor is slipping remove the nozzle on the rear and may be the intake grate to check by hand .....it may not slip by hand probly slip when under a load

wear ring........
the wear ring is located beetween the impellor and pump shoe if this is worn this will also give you probloms.... you will need a set of feeler gauges and measure the gap between the impellor and ring i think the sevice limit is @ 0.6mm

me persannally if i did all this stated above and it still seems like its slipping i would remove the jet pump by removing the..... nozzle from the rear..... and pump shoe..... intake grate and remove the prop and inspect in more detail for damage

hopefully nothing is wrong and hopefull that the same thing happend to me with the seeweed and when you switched the engine off the weed has also let go due to the suction effect

i have a workshop manual that covers the 750 zxi and the 900 zxi they do have a wear ring.........easiest way is to shine a torch down the rear of the pump and have a look you should be able to see it

good luck with yours keep us posted on what you find

hi there.... yes the wear ring is by itself but sometimes the pump shoe corrodes behind the wear ring also the wear ring on my 900 is stainless steel some other makes and models use plastic or nylon materials

salt water should not be a problom as long as you wash completly and lube every thing up its normally the sand when launching and retreiving from a beach that kills the wearings ive ran all my skis and boats in salt water as there is no fresh water riding where i live but washing and is critical as well as lubing all cables ie stearing trim throttle cables... etc...
