Default STX 1100 The battle lasting longer than World War II

Hi Guys,

I bought this ski a year ago as a "cheap" Project. With the impression that after a few hours she will be on its way. how I was wrong haha

When I bought the ski the bush the connects the engine to the pump was perished and ripped to bits. So I replaced that .

Took it for a spin and was only pulling 5500rpm. I then did the following
- Compression check, came back around 120psi each
- Carbys rebuilt (ouch)
- Tested for spark
- replaced plugs
- tried running without a lead connected one cylinder at a time, realised that it made no difference with cylinder 3 disconnected. So I replaced coil 3 and lead. Still no improvement.
- had a closer look at the plugs and realised it looked like cylinder 3's plug was wet with water. tore the head off and had the head gasket replaced. ( was told not to skim the head). reassembled and it started a lot easier. put it in the water and for the first 30 seconds ran pretty decent seing around 6300rpm. then reverted back to the 5500rpm .

By this stage I am ready to burn this ski. back to the garage..

Tear the head off replace the head gasket again, this time i take the head in to get skimmed, Head guru said it was slightly off but is fine now. Also told to inspect the manifolds and make sure there is no corrosion leeking water back into the cylinder. Manifolds look brand new!

take it for a spin, and the Ski hammers hitting 7200 Rpm. A very Happy man.
tie it up to the pier go have lunch. Jump on start it up and BAM 5500rpm. So im furious, drive around for a couple minutes looking for a rock to hit so i can sink it, Then all of a sudden it kicks in and its back to 7200 or so and flying again. This happens on and off. Now im thinking fuel. However Im not really confident when it comes to pulling the carbs apart. I also get a flat spot around 2600- 2700. I spoke to the local kawasaki dealer he thinks maybe the slides are sticking.

If anyone has any idea what the problem maybe id greatly appreciate it.

cause im stumped!!

Cheers in advance

Craig

for those that run into the same problem, turned out to be a leaking exhaust manifold gasket! water was leeking into the cylinder
