Default Upgrading stock '83 JS440, Impeller plus more

Hi everyone, I am very new to the jetskiing world, purchasing a stock '83 JS440 last season. I will be upgrading it this summer and would like to start with the impeller, although I have no idea what pitch to get for my stock engine. It seems like many people go with 15.5/16 and I have also done some research on solas' 13-18 variable pitch. Is there a huge advantage to getting a variable pitch over a regular single pitch? Any help would be appreciated.

Also I do plan on upgrading more very soon like a new intake and ride plate, but after these 3 things what direction should I head next for upgrades?

Thanks
-Ryan
