Default 2000 1100 STX DI swamped

A friend and his wife were riding my 1100 and capsized it while making a slow turn. He turned it the wrong way when righting it (counter clockwise) and the engine compartment was full of water up to the fuel injectors when I towed it to shore.

When I got it home I pulled the spark plugs and ran the starter until water was no longer blowing from the cylinders. Reinstalled the plugs and it started up after a couple of tries. Hopefully no permanent damage was done.

Why would it take on so much water from a capsize? Could it be a faulty seat seal, or from turning it the wrong direction when righting it?
