If you don't have the proper equipment, and haven't marked where the previous plate was set at for a starting point, then I would "strongly suggest" that you take it to a professional to set it up.
There is a very fine line between perfect timing advance, and complete piston meltdown. And if you set it on the side of caution you won't get the potential performance.
