Default Need help with my new starter

I just got a new starter for my Js550 and it works great. The problem is it wont disengage. I tested the new starter by just hooking it up to the battery and running it. When I stop it (by removing the positive battery wire) it stops yet doesn't disengage. It stops in gear. Will it wear in and disengage. Can I run it like this?

When say you just hooked it up to the battery, are you saying outside of ski?

Hmmm, is the starter button sticking by chance? I'll try to ask my mechanic friend later. Maybe a bad starter

Thanks for your help! I called the company and they said it shouldn't do that and they have sent me a replacement. No let me ask you this. My jet ski is in the shop for an ignition issue. They will briefly start the engine with the starter that wont retract. Will this damage my flywheel to just briefly start the engine if the starter inst retracting?

It shouldn't. Just the starter because it is still spinning
