Default pump shaft got shorter ?

I pulled the engine out of a friends '96 kaw STS 750 to install new top end. When I tried to put it back in , the impeller shaft is too short to reach the
crankshaft coupler. It's lined up, but it won't mesh with the engine mounted.
Any ideas ? I didn't think the pump shaft could slide back but now I'm not sure what's up.
Thanks
Bud

Just slide it forward. Did you take the engine off the mounting plate? Make sure the motor is where it is supposed to be and slide the shaft forward

No the engine was not removed from the mount plate. Just the 4 rubber mount bolts that attach the plate to the hull. Thats why I'm pulling my hair out trying to figure what happened ! So the pump shaft will slide forward ? I tried to move it forward gently, but I wasn't sure so I quit. If the shaft does move, what keeps it from sliding back when in operation? Thanks for the advice.

Just to be sure, the shaft is about 1 to 1 1/4 inches from meshing completely. Any suggestions on how to get it to move? I'm not very familiar with the jet pump and I certainly don't want to damage anything.
Thanks
