Default JS 440/550 Need some help

I had a post last week that it seemed like my 91' 550 didn't have any power. Well after working on it for a week, I figured out it is actually a 440 in a 550 hull. With that said, now I cant even get it to run.

I adjusted the carburator to the settings for a 550 thinking it was a 550 and i could get it running, leave the dock, and it would just die at 1/2 throttle or more. I could save it by letting off but couldn't get it going any moderate speed at all. So I brought it back into the garage and took the carburator all the way apart, cleaned everything, blew everything out. Put it back together and wouldnt start. I can get it to start if I put gas in the spark plugs but obviously only runs for a second until all the gas is burnt up then dies. What should my process be for checking why its not getting gas. It has to be something I did as it ran before I took it apart. I have all the jetting back to how it was when I got it.

If ur carb has 3 bolts on top its a 38. I think. The 44 has 4 bolts on top.

Seems that way. If I were you id get a full rebuid kit for the carb with updated needle and seat. Also may consider a smaller carb. A 44 on a sttock 440 could be over kill.

ok. I'd just like to get it running good, sell it, find a bigger one.

Ill look into a rebiuld kit.

Any ideas on what I could have done wrong, when re assembling the carb that its not getting gas? Im assuming the problem is it's not getting gas because when I put it in the cylinder it starts, burns that gas up, then dies.

The only thing I can think of is some fuel kins got hooked up wrong or something inside the carb went bad or clogged. Check the filter bowl see if its full check ur lines get a primer kit

Well I got it going!

I blew out all the gas lines, and checked the filter bowl. I read somewhere on this site, that if you take the spark arrester put your hand over the top of the carburater and push the start button down - while its turning over remove your hand - it should start. So I took the spark arrester off and tried to start it - fired right up. Put the spark arrester back on and tried again - fired right up. So tonight I brought it down to the lake put it in the water and worked great. Still a bit underpowered for myself (comparing against my 750 SXI) but it seemed to run good.

I think there was something in the lines, along with the incorrect jetting settings due to me tuning it thinking it was a 550. I believe I have got the jetting correct now though.

Thanks for all the input!
