Default Melted my STX1100 resonator and built another out of steel

My 2000 STX1100 DI has melted the plastic resonator. I am confused as to why this would happen because after every outing I run the ski on a hose and I observe cooling water spray out of the exhaust. I have been running the ski pretty hard lately.

I wanted to see if I could get away from the plastic resonator and fabricate a steel hybrid. Picture is attached. Originally I wanted to substitute a straight pipe. Others have suggested this is a bad idea on a fuel injected system.

Does anyone see a problem with using the modified resonator? Any problems with that could cause damage? Any other tips?

Thank you
