Smile WTB Kawasaki 650sx aftermarket set up

I just got a 88 kawasaki 650sx yesterday from a guy in KY. He said it ran good. When I got there no battery so no way to test. Said if it did not run he would give me my money back. So I rolled the dice. I got it home put a battery in it and it turned over fine but would not run. I sprayed some starter fuel in the carb and it fired right up. It is completely stock with the small 28mm carb with the external fuel pump on the side of the ski. Now I suspect the fuel pump is bad and after looking at everything online decided to ask you expert out there. I don't have a ton of money in the ski and only got it for fun. I want to put a bigger carb and different intake on it. I don't know what else I should do to it. Or just fix the fuel pump and leave it alone. If anyone has any parts for sale cheap let me know. I was thinking about a much bigger carb just for the fact that the fuel pump is built in and I can take this external fuel pump off. I going to do a compression check on the motor in a few minutes. I was thinking it should have around 150PSI in each cylinder. Or what is acceptable for these older ski. anything I should look at. The stop/start safety switch I don't think it is working correctly either. I can just pull out the button where the layarnd goes. Is this normal. Any help is welcome an appreciated. I am trying to do all the work myself. I am a pretty good wrench turner. I am also going to look at the impeller. I have 3 sit down type skis but this is only my third stand up. The other two I never had a problem. Let me know. Thanks guys.
