According to a report in the Grand Haven Tribue, Grand Haven, Mich., officers will be patrolling local waterways next summer aboard personal watercraft, thanks to an extremely inexpensive lease agreement.

American Honda Motor Co. of Torrance, Calif., has agreed to lease two personal watercraft to the Grand Haven Department of Public Safety for $1 each per year. The watercraft will actually come from Muskegon, Lt. Mark Reiss said.

"Although well-served by the U.S. Coast Guard and the Ottawa County Sheriff's marine patrol, we believe the addition of personal watercraft staffed with public safety personnel will combine with our current efforts to provide a safer water environment for our residents and visitors," Grand Haven Department of Public Safety Director Dennis Edwards explained in a city memo.

Reiss said the watercraft will be used mainly on summer weekends along the city's shorelines.
