The IJSBA National Tour races in Racine, Wisconsin this past
weekend provided not only a lot of action, but also a lot of
surprises. Some of the biggest names in racing showed up
including Chris MacClugage, Dustin Farthing, Rick Sherker, Josh
Block, Yimmy Cebulski, and the Frame brothers just to name a
few. All the racers put on some great performances to keep the
spectators who came to see the volleyball matches in shock and
awe.

Round 3 of the UWP-IJSBA National Tour in Racine, WI will go down in history as one of the wildest weekends of racing in some time with heavy fog wreaking havoc on Sunday.

Saturday started out strong with Macc Racing/Riva Yamaha/Dean’s Team rider Chris MacClugage taking the moto 1 victory in Pro Runabout Stock abord his Yamaha FZR. Teammate Cameron Frame put in a hard charging effort to round off the top three in the class.

Cameron’s brother and teammate Trey Frame continued his domination of
the Normally Aspirated class aboard his VXR finishing first in both motos on
Saturday. Jordan McLean once again proved he is the man to beat in the
Pro-Am Runabout Limited class earning 2 moto victories. And in the Pro
Runabout Open class, Riva Yamaha/Dean’s Team rider Dustin Charrier pulled
off a moto 1 podium finish, which was phenomenal because of the injuries
he suffered at Round 2.

Mother Nature was the toughest competitor the next day with heavy fog
rolling in midway of the first race of the morning and did not lift for the
remainder of the day. The promoters were forced to red flag the race and
the remainder of Sunday racing. Still, Yamaha racer proved that they own
the closed course when Mother Nature allows.

WetRacer: Where did you grow up?

Tony: I grew up in Newbury Park, Southern California. It is about 40 minutes North of L.A. and we were very close to the beach so I rode the surf a lot.

WetRacer: When did you first get into watercraft?

Tony: Back when I was working at a grocery store in high school. Aco-worker
friend “Dave” had a 1989 Yamaha Waverunner 500! He brought me to Lake Pyramid to go riding. Once I idled past the No Wake Zone and pulled the Waverunner 500’s throttle past 20 MPH, I was truly in love! I didn’t realize at the time – that split moment would alter my future.

WetRacer: Wow! Waverunner 500, So how did this change your future?

Tony: Well, the next day, I begged my dad to go with me to our local power sport shop – I think it was Thousand Oaks Kawasaki. When we got to the shop, there it was. The fresh out of the crate, brand new, first three seater ever made! Yamaha 650 Waverunner III, it was like destiny. Since I was fresh out of high school and had little money or credit, I begged my dad to co-sign for me and we purchased my dream Waverunner. For the next 20 years, all of our family vacations revolved around a watercraft. And of course now it is how I make a living – the business of watercraft.

WetRacer: We heard that you were a former jet-ski racer?

Tony: Hmm…where did you hear that?

WetRacer: We have our sources, maybe some old articles from CT Sports racing from Region 1.

Tony: It was embarrassing. I started out in racing with my Yamaha Waverunner III, and I got my butt kicked out there, in spite of spending $14 grand fixing it up. Way back in 1991 it was huge money to spend $14k on a Waverunner III and I was crazy enough to do it. That thing had everything on it from Coffman’s pipe, total loss ignition, etc. They used to call it the “Flying Waverunner III.” It was fast, but it couldn’t corner worth spit.

WetRacer: Ok, interesting. So did that make you stop racing?

Tony: Nope! By 1992, Kawasaki came out with their 750 SX stand-up. We ran down to Castaic Ski and Sport and bought two of them! One for me and my sister. Mine was built as a limited ski and hers was stock. For the next 3 years I raced mostly region 1 and 2 with CT Sports in California.

WetRacer: How did you do as a stand-up jet-ski racer?

Tony: I actually did ok as a stand-up racer. Toward my last race season, I took first overall in California. Not too bad considering most of the races there were 25 to 55 riders in my stand-up class! Back in the good old days stand-up ski classes were huge!

Wet Racer: Do you have any regrets?

Tony: None. Jet-ski racing was one of the best parts of my life. And now we are involved with the sport on a different level and this feels really good.

When Pro rider Trey Frame requested another pair of Jettribe’s RS-15 gloves, Tony was surprised since these gloves typically last one hard riding season. Trey’s response: “The gloves are wearing good, but someone in Canada liked
them so well they decided to take them. I guess they really liked your work!” Maybe for 2012, we should put a warning label on our gloves: “These gloves are highly prone to getting snagged by others!”

The Jettribe RS-16 John and Jacket Racesuite is built, designed, and engineered for the riders’ maximum comfort, flexibility, warmth, and mobility. Our Jettribe 2011 John and Jacket RS-16 Racesuits are built with strategic placement of 2/3 mm neoprene panels. The 3 mm are for the warmth and the 2 mm are built in the panels with high movement, inner arms and legs. We spent a year of field testing with our Jettribe Race Team under racing conditions. The results are features like the “Jet Grip” texture print placed on the inner thigh panels and legs to provide the rider with additional traction while riding. Plus, the “injected” PVC rubber knee pads offer grip and protection. All seems have our interlocking flat stitches to provide a watertight seal and maximum comfort against the skin. We carefully select just the right combination of thicknesses of neoprene to retain a rider’s body heat while riding in various conditions. The RS-16 neoprene’s property is a close, high density foam made up of thousands of tiny air bubbles known as “cells.” These cells provide an insulation barrier which slows down the conduction of heat, allowing the body’s heat to be retained.

Jettribe RS-16 suits are engineered with the understanding of the PWC rider’s constant movement which often over-generates body heat. For example, surf wetsuits are designed for a body constantly being in the water. While
our Jettribe RS-16 racesuits are designed for the true PWC rider who is both in the water and in the cold air. Many riders have tested out our new and improved wetsuit, including Pro Ski racer Rick Sherker.
