Default Race the Strait deadline looms

PORT ANGELES -- Registrations will close Sept. 17 for the inaugural Race the Strait endurance run from Port Angeles to Victoria, B.C., Canada, and back. During the Friday, Sept. 28 event, riders will race 20 miles across the Strait of Juan de Fuca to Vancouver Island and back. The race starts at 11 a.m. inside Port Angeles Harbor. The route takes racers north across the Strait -- conditions can vary from smooth to open seas -- to the Esquimalt Anglers Association boating facility in Fleming Park, Esquimalt. Esquimalt is a small city located just west of the entrance to Victoria, B.C. Riders will have a mandatory "pit stop" and customs/immigration check in and out. Following the stop, they will race back across the Strait to the finish line inside Port Angeles Harbor. The entry fee for the race is $40, plus $10 for riders wanting a T-shirt. Riders wanting to complete the event as a "poker run," without being timed, are also encouraged to participate. Following the Friday endurance run, racers will be able to remain in Port Angeles for a weekend of racing in the harbor. Five time slots are designated for Saturday and Sunday, filling gaps in the Strait Thunder hydroplane season-ender. Registration for watercross events in the harbor can be completed race day. For more information, log onto Strait Thunder - Port Angeles Hydroplane Racing, or call Roger Harnack at 360-461-7347. The event is being hosted by the Peninsula Water Sports Association and the city of Port

Registration is now closed.

More on the race:

Several of the nation's top Jet Ski riders will hit the choppy, gray waters of the Strait of Juan de Fuca for the first-ever Race the Strait on Friday.

It's a full-throttle endurance run between Port Angeles and Victoria.

The only race of its kind in the Pacific Northwest for the zippy watercraft, it is a new addition to the fifth annual Strait Thunder hydroplane races this weekend.

About 10 runabouts and two stand-up watercraft racers - including a 71-year -old Port Angeles man - will hit the water at 11 a.m. Friday en route to Esquimalt, on the west entrance of Victoria's outer harbor.

The runabouts should make the 20.75-mile trip to the Esquimalt Angler's Association boat launch and park without refueling.
