Gas Mileage and a couple other questions
I posted this over in the general area but thought I woud post it here too just in case you didn't see it or don't go over there.
I have a 1996 Kawasaki 750cc STS. I am looking into a 2004 Sea Doo GTI LE RFI.
How much horse power does the Kawasaki Have?
The Sea Doo has a Two-stroke, twin-cylinder Rotax® Fuel Injection R.A.V.E.™ exhaust, Water cooled, 782cc, 110hp
Now I have several questions here about the two machines..
1) and most importantly, can anyone tell me how much gas mileage I am getting with the Kawasaki (roughly) and what I would be getting with the Sea Doo? I need numbers. I thought I remember reading that old Kawasaki's get like 2.5 mpg but maybe I am wrong. What is better on gas a 2 stroke engine or a 4 stroke?
2) Right now with the Kawasaki I have to mix the gas with 2 cycle oil and its a real pain. So would I have to do this with the Sea Doo and if not what is involved with the oil now, like how often would I haveto change or add more?
3) How fast does the Sea Doo go? Top speed (roughly)
4) WHat is a better engine a 2 stroke or a 4 stroke. I am going to use it to just cruise around for like 15 minutes a time as I own a camp so I am not on it for the whole day. I want to go fast but 50mph is fast enough as the water ususally gets pretty choppy. So do you think the Sea Doo engine as well as the ski in general would be right for me?
5) What do you think I could get for the Kawasaki? Like I said it is a 1996 in good condition with 750cc engine with a rebuild engine in 2005. We purchased it in 2006 for $3,000 so I was thinking $1,500. Too much? Too little?
I thank you for reading and answering the questions in advance. The most important thing here is the gas mileage and the oil thing. I need to convince my uncle to go in with us so he needs to know what were getting now and what we would get. If you don't know but know a good article website or magazine that would also be helpful. Thank you again.

Wow, you had alot of questions. I have never replied on here but figured i would give you my opinion. 1st, ive owned alot of 2 stroke and 4 stroke engines, mainly onland quads and what not. I think the 4 stroke is a more reliable, long lasting, cleaner running engine. As for power, theres no comparing a 2 stroke and 4 stroke in power. If its the same CC just differnt stroke, the 2 stroke will almost always produce more power. I think some of these skies use a turbo now in the 4 strokes to compansate. I have a 96 seadoo gsx 800 (110 hp 2 stroke) that ran like a raped ape for years, but now the battery wont stay charged (salt water ruins). I think if i do get a new one i will spring for the newer 4 strokes as i also believe that the 2 strokes will soon be out of production.
As for mixing, my seadoo has an oil injection unit. Just fill when low and let the machine inject the oil into the fuel as needed. Its much easier than mixing the right ratio and filling with gas cans and stuff. I would also have to guess that the 4 stroke motors would get slightly better gas milleage as well.
Also, if your looking for 50 mph, i would think that most waverunners at or around 800cc and above should produce that no problem.
BTW, i think 1500 for your ski is more than reasonable exspecially if its on a trailer. Try using craigslist.com to advertise and sell it, ive sold tons of stuff on there.
Hope this helps. At least you will be out riding one or the other this summer, ill be sittin at the docks with a battery system that wont charge....HAHA

Thank you for your help. I kinda knew that 4 strokes were better but I didn't know that 2 strokes were more powerful. Im kinda trying to get what the budget allows so if I did have the money to get a 4 stroke I would but well see. Thank you again. I also checked out that website as it seems pretty good.
Yea with the oil, what I do is fill it then it does mix it with the gas. But I have to fill it, lets say for 20 gallons or so, I have to put a bottle of the 2 cycle oil. So I was wondering if you still needed to do thatt or you just fill it at the start of the season. So basically I am asking is it like the Kawasaki or is the new Sea Doo like a car where you change it every once in while.
Would you have any kind of guess of what the gas mileage is with the Kawasaki because I think the Sea Doo gets like 11 mpg I read somewhere so I need to know what were getting with the Kawasaki.
But great advice thank you, thank you and thank you.

Oh I know that all of them are horrible the only way I could upgrade was to get my uncle to come in with us and he didn't see any reason to unless the newer skies get better mileage. I guess they do a little bit but not much.

you'll have to fill the 2-strokes oil tank probably every other tank,,, the 4-stroke is like a car, it doesnt burn the oil with the fuel just uses it for lube,, so you only need to change the oil when regular scheduled maintanence calls for it...
the 4-strokes will always get better gas mileage,, and be cheaper to operate in the long run.... but fixing them is a little harder.

YEs thank you for that site. I found that like a day after I posted this. It is very helpful and I thank you for posting that. It basically answered my questions about the gas mileage so I urge everyone else to take a look at it.
