Exclamation 1999 GTI over revving?

Its been working fine this summer. All of a sudden, we have to really baby the throttle to get it to accelerate. We use to be able to just punch the throttle and off we would go. Now, it just starts to over rev unless we very slowly start to increase the throttle. What's up with it? It starts and idles fine.

Doesn't sound like an engine problem, instead I'd be looking at the intake grate, impeller, wear ring, & nozzle for obstructions, clearances, etc.
