Default 94 or 94 Spi with a blown engine. Help.

Looking for some help figuring out what caused this engine to fail. My buddy gave me the ski when it abruptly stopped running. Turns out it threw a rod. I took the head apart and I can tell it was hot when it failed. Definitely some pitting on the pistons, etc.

I'd like to put a new motor in it but I don't want to blow up a new motor the same way the old one died. Any ideas what might cause it to throw a rod? The cylinder walls looked good and it appeared to be running fine until it died.

OH, and would I get an extra charge for the thrown rod by SBT? I know they charge for certain damages.
