Default Newbie...and I mean as green as they come!

Ok, I'm kickin' around the idea of pickin' up a couple used PWC's. I know just about absolutely nothing about boating or PWC's. I do have buddies who have both boats and PWC's so I can get some info from them but I want to have something to compare it to.
I'm thinking Sea Doo and was looking at machines about the mid '90s. I see a couple '96 xp's with trailer for like $3500 or a couple '96 gtx's with trailer for $3800. What are your thoughts? What do I need to look out for when looking these things over? Do I need to take them out on the water for sure before purchasing them? Should I have a shop look at them first?
The guy with the xp's says one of them have an SBT engine. Are they ok or should I steer clear?
Any help would be great folks.
Thanks.

Hi, welcome to the forum. I see you are looking at a couple of Seadoos. Being used two strokes that are 14-15 years old is a dice throw. How many hours on the SBT motor? You need to do a compression test, check the oil lines in the injection system. Check the age of the battery, they are a $100.00.

XP's are different than the GTX's. The XP is a sporty 2 seat ski with less balance at slow speeds. But good for one person wave jumping, not really well suited for two riders.

The GTX,s were the cruisers for that era. Which makes them better suited as an all around ski. If you are gonna pull a tube then that rules out the XP's. as far as the price goes those skis are all over the place based on condition and hours. Regardless of which you choose, Seatrail it first.
