Default compression test question

I have a 1995 seadoo xp. While out it was running fine then after a few minutes it started bogging down then would run fine then bogg down again. While it was bogging down I accidently pulled the lanyard out so the motor quit. I couldn't crank it back up. It would turn over but wouldnt start. I replace plugs and still won't crank. Did a compression test and both cylinders registered 120psi. What is the correct reading. The engine is a 717. Ive never delt with skis before but woukd really like to work on it myself. When I did the compression test I pull one spark plug out at a time when testing. Should I have taken them both out and then tested our does it matter?

Yes, you did it right by removing one plug at a time. Did you hold the throttle wide open? 120 is low. The 717 should put out between 145-150 psi.

Yes i held the throttle open. What do I need to do next?

One more question about the compression test, when I take the spark plug wire off to test that cylinder do I lay the spark plug wire to the side or do I do something with it. I seen were someobody mentioned to ground it. How you do that and would it make a difference in the reading?

Sounds like a fuel issue to me. Try putting a bit of premix in each cylinder and cranking it.

chomamma2, please excuse my lack of knowledge but how do you put the premix in the cylinder? Also once i got that figured out would the premix i already have made up for my weed eater be ok to use for this?

Take the plugs out and put a teaspoon of the weed eater fuel in each cylinder and give it a crank. If it fires up and runs for a bit and then dies, look for a fuel issue. Could be fuel selector gummed up, or filter, but most likely a carb issue.

Don't get overcomplicated here. 120 psi. is low reading. Take it to mechanic for verification if need be. If number is true, you've got serious problems to address. Better get on them.

Ok so top end rebuild, replace grey lines, fuel selector, and rebuild carbs? Question about top end rebuild, is it a given that the cylinders will have to be bored out or does it depend what shape the pistons are in?

120 psi is low, but I dont think it is the issue of bogging down. If it runs fine then bogs down and then runs fine again, low compression is not causing it run slow run fast run slow. Just my thoughts.

When I put the premix in the cylinders do I put spark plugs back in before cranking?
