Default Sea-Doo problem

I have a 1997 Bombadier GTX. It revs pretty high, but there is no foreward movement. Like the "clutch is slipping" !! If I let off the gas, and baby it, it will run pretty well and take the gas and really go. What is the problem? Thanks.

Make sure your intake grate is not clogged with anything like seaweed for example.

Symptoms sound like a wear ring that needs replaced.

Is the replacement of a wear ring a large task? Is it something a person could do or does it need to be done at a dealership? Thanks.

I have 2 of the same model and replaced the wear ring and rebuilt the jet pump in one of them a few weeks ago. It really wasn't hard at all, removing the old wear ring was probably the most time consuming part of it. Mine seem to be bad about getting the grate clogged easily, pretty much everytime we go out it gets some unseen crap in it and suddenly stops going and just revs, ususally i just kill the engine for a couple seconds and when i re-fire it whatever was causing the issue has came loose and its good to go.

I know nothing about these things! Where is the grate located? Can it be seen from the outside of the body or is it inside the engine compartment? THANKS!

Default Grate Location

It's on the underside of the hull - usually about 2/3 of the way back. You should be able to see & remove it by crawling under the unit while on the trailer.

The intake is underneath the hull. It is where the water enters into the impeller. If you have seaweed or debris stuck in the grate you'll have a all gas no go condition. Other wise, like someone said your wear ring needs to be replaced.

If you know nothing about jet skis and/or are not mechanically inclined you can do a lot more damage than good. Best to find a private PWC mechanic in your area and let him do it.

Obtaining a service manual is the first step. It'll show procedures and pictures.

The intake is near the back of the hull underneath. Everytime I take mine out I have to stop and get off to remove seaweed from it. Make sure you turn it off first, seen people do dumb things... And no there is nothing you can do to prevent things from getting sucked into the intake, its just a design flaw that exists no matter the manufacture. If your intake is clear then idk... I guess refer to the rest of the posts.
