Default 97 Tigershark Daytona 1000 bad starter?

It has been sitting for 4 years but ran good back then. Put anew battery in to see if it would crank and I only get a clicking sound from the electrical box. I also tried to run a hot wire direct to starter but nothing but a lot of sparks. The motor is not locked up as I turned it over with a wrench on the driveshaft. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

If it were me I would remove the starter and test it. If you find that it doesn't run then disassemble it. If you do so make sure to put marks on components to make sure you re-assemble it properly. Alternatively you could take pictures as you disassemble it to asisit in re assembly. Make sure nothing is corroded or stuck such as the brushes or bushings.

If the starter does run then the next step is to remove the intermediate gear Some times they get stuck from sitting and needs to be cleaned and greased this is the one way clutch that kicks the starter out of gear once the engine starts. You need to remove the front engine cover and the flywheel to get it out. You will need a flywheel puller to remove it.

Thanks for the tips! To remove the starter does the motor have to be removed? I have seen posts that have conflicting info on removing the starter on these Daytona 1000's but can not find any detailed instructions.

According to the manual I have on the 96 900's ( I'm fairly certain it's the same as a 1000) you remove the two bolts at the rear of the starter and it should pull out. There should be an o-ring on the end of the starter. once you pull it you should see it, it also makes it hard to pull out sometimes. I believe they are 10 mm wrench and one has a wire on it. I saw a starter rebuild kit on ebay for 18.00 US, and they also had the bendix/ intermediate gear for 24.

Default 97 Tigershark 1000 Starter

This starter is impossible to get to! I have checked out everything and seems like all is well but the starter does nothing, just clicking from the electrical box. Tried to "Hotwire" direct to starter also with no luck.

Question: Is there a way to remove the starter without removing the motor?

how about some pics? Can you get to the two 10 mm bolts in the back of the starter? That should be all that's holding it in. If the exhaust is in the way remove it.

I am having same problem! Except I replaced my Starter and throw out bendix last summer and tried to start my ski today and got the clicking sound and when it didnt click the starter ran but didnt engage. Was wondering if there was a fix to stopping this problem from happening again?
I was thinking of drilling and tapping a hole on the magneto cover to spray with wd 40 or something to unlock this thing.
Last year when i replaced this I did replace the starter and the throw out bendix without removing the motor. However, I did have to take off the middle carb and reed valve. This was a MOFO!
Really not looking foward to doing this all again and if I do I want to remedy the problem once and for all.

They get corroded from sitting around all winter, warm humid air turns to cool damp air in the fall. It needs to be removed and greased, or lubricated with something. I prefer anti-seize as the graphite sticks to things and is not a thick oil. remove it once more and lubricate it. I have never had to mess with mine since I took it out and lubed it.
