Default carb issues?

Hi I've got a 1994 tigershark with a 650 motor. When I run it on a trailer, it runs fine, I can rev it up and it will stay running. As soon as i put it in the lake, I can rev it up to speed and it will only go for a couple seconds. If I just let it idle in the lake then it will run alot longer but still eventually die out. I read somewhere about the pop off valve in the carb being the problem but I'm not sure what the pop off valve is or where it is located in the carb. Any help is appreciated thanks!:cheeky4 ::roll eyes:
