96 Montego 640 problem-please help.
96 Tigarshark Montego 640.
I'm new to PWC's so try to take it easy on me. lol
I bought it used. It starts up nicely and seems to run great out of the water, but when I put it in the water, it dosent want to go.
It will putt around but really really slow, with the throttle about 1/4 or 1/2 way pulled.
If I pull the throttle all the way, it bogs down and dies.
I noticed when I was putt-ing around, the exaust was a little white.
I just filled it with fresh gas,and added fresh oil, before getting it on the water.
I'm used to 2-stroke 4 wheelers, and it seems like its a bad mixture of gas and oil, or possibly a fouled plug. If it was a 4 wheeler.
The ski has oil injection so I couldnt have messed up the mixture, since theres seperate tanks for both.
(on the oil cap, theres a bobber thing, but its broken and the bobber is just sitting on the black rods going into the tank,is this a problem?)
I looked at the oil resivour, and it looks like there is a hole that sticks up on top of the tank,(like its supposed to be there) but it dosent have a cap on it.Its open.
Should there be a cap on it? Could this be part of the problem? Like its not getting oil pressure without that cap on the tank?
It seems like its something simple, like a air hose came off or something like that.
Could it be impellor damage?
It starts and runs/idles fine, it just wont go.
Any thoughts or suggestions please?

I am no expert, but from my work with outboard motors, it seems like an obvious case of the carbs. They will need to be pulled off and searious cleaned. I have experienced this many times with many outboards. Hope this helps

Thanks for the reply.
you are right, it was the carb. Had a re-biuld kit installed and now it runs like a champ.
Althought, now its leaking blue oil from somewhere by the engine when its running.
I'm guessing its a gasket.
Any thoughts or suggestions?

mmmm, Being a two stoke, and I am assuming has a oil injection pump. I would look if the oil looks the same as new oil, if it does you have a leak between you oil tank and injection pump. If the oil is not the same and looks like it has gone through the motor, then you will need to take a serious look at all your exhaust gaskets, don't leave this because water flows in a jacket round the exhaust section. If there is excessive oil in the exhaust I would check my oil pump to make sure it is not over pumping oil. If you really want to be safe, remove the oil pump, install a block off plate and premix the fuel and oil. Hopes this helps a little, cheers

thank you very much.
I will check that this weekend.
I think its before the engine, but I'm not sure.
The oil looked new.
if it is before,
Would the block off plate be the way to go?
Or should I try to fix the problem if its a gasket or the pump over-pumping?
How would it over pump?
Wouldnt I notice that in the performance? Like it pumping too much oil into the injen and messing up the mixture?

I would start trying to find the leak, some people tend to remove the oil pump when they rebuild the motor, so if your is working then I would leave it. There is an adjustment screw on the oil pump that allows you to adjust the flow amount of oil but be very careful with this too little oil and motor goes boom. better to get a Jetski mechanic to do this, they have to place fuel mixed with oil in the tank, remove the oil pump pipes and check how many cc's of oil comes through. Very painful process.
Your ski's performance will not be noticably affected with too much oil, it will just smoke alot, so if that is not the case, leave the oil pump alone, it is fine. Locate the oil leak
Hope this helps
