Default js 550 pilot setting

I'm trying to set the carb on my 1989 js 550, I have a service manuel and have base settings for high and low speed jets, but have found no base setting for the pilot screw.I was wondering if anyone knows a good starting point for this and what actually is the function of the pilot screw...
