New coil, no spark?
Hi, I'm new to this forum and new to 2 stroke engines and I have a problem that I have not been able a figure out. I have a 96 Yamaha 1100 Waverunner/Venture that I put a new top-end kit on, rebuilt the carbs and put a new coil on #3 cyl because it was not fire(no spark). The new coil will not put out a spark and that is my problem. The other two cylinders run fine, but #3 is dead. Can anyone give me any ideas why the new coil won't fire, as I mentioned I'm new to 2 stroke engines, but I am a VW engine mechanic(4 stroke). Any help would be much appreciated
Thanks, Jim

Looks like it would have to be a bad ground lead or spark plug lead from the coil. Only other possibility that I could figure, would be a faulty CDI.

New coil, No spark
Thanks Ernest T. I have checked the ground and lead to the coil and they are good. Have you ever heard of a CDI that would fire on two cylinders and not fire the third one? Most people say it normally works or it doesn't, but this may be an odd one. Not being a 2 stoke mechanic, I'm not sure how all this works. Is there anything else that controls the CDI or the spark timing?
Thanks again, Jim

No, the only CDIs I've seen are either completely dead, or not, but I think it could be possible to have one that works partially. You might want to look at the wires and connections to the CDI...........could one of them be loose?

New coil, No spark
I'm going to take it all apart and see if anything is loose or whatever I can find. I 'll let you know when I figure it out.
Thanks, Jim

pretty sure that model has seperate pickup coils. my guess is that your problem is going to be behind the flywheel cover.

New coil, No spark
I found corrosion in the connector from the CDI unit to the #3 coil, but it still won't fire the coil after cleaning it. I am going to go deeper now, to the pick-up coil to see if there is corrosion there too. Will advise when I get that far. I think I'm on the right track though.
Thanks again, Jim

I just went through this same scenario with a 96 1100. It was the CDI. There are separate wires coming out of the unit and one set was dead. I found a used electronics box on e-bay and she runs great now. Best of luck.
