Default Confused!! xl-1200 which engine

Thinking of purchasing a xl 1200. Has year 98 on serial number (HIN) but a 2001 hull colors. It also has the power valve engine and to my knowledge a 98 has the carburated version. The engine is bad (cylinder 1 front has no compression. 2 & 3 the same (about 105 psi) Should I rebuild or can I put a carburated 1200 motor in it. Can buy for the package for $300 with a trailer. The hour meter reads 34.5 hrs. It was in storage for 5 years. Thanks.

That's a great deal. The trailer is worth the money by itself. Rebuild the motor and you'll practically have a new jet ski for well under $2k. Post a pic of it if you can.

I think the fuel injected came out in 2003, I know it did on the GP1300r, not very familiar with the XLTs though.

Are you saying it doesn't have carbs?

Then just rebuild the one cylinder and you should be good to go. Try to determine why it lost one cylinder though. Weird for a ski withonly 35 hours.

Letting a jet ski sit is probably the worst thing you can do for them. Plan on rebuilding all 3 cylynder, overhauling the triple carb rack, replacing the oil lines, flushing out all cooling passages, getting rid of the cat. converter, and updating powervalve clips if you want a dependable waverunner.
