Default Electric Issue

We have a 1998 Waverunner XL760 and the other day while riding we got a volt warning. We headed for shore and on the way in the meter reset a couple times and each time it started back up and gave the volt warning. Once we got to the dock and shut the engine off, it wouldn't fire again. We tested the battery and it was a little low so we changed it. Now it good voltage and nothing powers on. Can't get the meter to come up to be able to start the engine or anything else. Any ideas on what the issue could be?

You put your security code in to unlock it, right?

I can't even get to the point to enter the code. I hold down the mode button and nothing happens. It is like there is no power at all. The only thing I could think is follow each wire one at a time to see if there is a cut or short somewhere.

I had an issue that was kind of similar on my 99 GP760. I believe the electronics are very similar.

I lost the ground to the electrical box. I fixed it by running a ground wire to one of the mounting bolts for the electrical box. If you have a volt meter or a test light, hook it up from the positive of the battery to the mounting bolts for the electrical box. You should read the battery voltage (usually around 12.5 to 13.1 volts with it not running).

You can try shorting the negative side of the battery to one of the mouting bolts for the elctrical box and see if it comes to life. The elctrical box should be grounded, so shorting the box to ground should not hurt anything. Inside that box there are two screws that all the ground connections go to. If the box itself isn't grounded, then nothing else gets a ground connection.

It was a grounding problem for sure. I haven't permanently fixed it, but when I held a wire to one of the mounting bolts for the electric box to one of the bolts for the exhaust, everything came to life. Now I just need to run a permanent ground wire from the electric box to permanently fix it. Thanks for the post!!!
