Default FX140 Questions

Hi- Have a couple of questions regarding my FX140.

1- Lubing the intermediate housing. Yamaha recommends .2-.27 oz of Yamaha marine grease once a year. Can I use my regular blue marine bearing grease or is the Yamaha grease something different. How do I estimate .2-.27 oz? How many squirts from a mini grease gun would you recommend?

2- I'm replacing one of my rear gunwale corner caps. I have the new piece with rivets & the rivet covers. Can I use my standard rivet gun on these rivets? Will the rivet shank shear off deep enough to allow the rivet cover to be pressed into the hole. Was not sure if a special tool is required or not.

Thank you for the advice.

All grease guns vary as to how much they put out per pump. On my full sized gun its almost exactly 1 gram per pump, so I put in 7 pumps each year. A mini gun would be less. The only way to know for sure is to pump some out and weigh it. I did 10 pumps on a postal scale to find out how much mine did per pump. Any marine grease should be fine, but put it in slow as to not damage the seals around the housing.

If this is the first time you've greased the intermediate housing yourself, I'd recommend that you remove the rubber hose to be sure it is full of grease. Many dealers do not know to grease the intermediate housing, and I've seen skis that have been serviced by a dealership for years that never had any grease applied to the intermediate housing. If the hose is empty, you will need to pump in lots more (on my gun its like 35 pumps) to fill the hose and get grease into the housing.

I don't know the answer to the rivet question, but I suspect a standard rivet gun would work.

That's a great idea about removing the hose. I was wondering how you would really know that the grease actually gets to the bearing. So I guess I should remove the hose, fill her up, stick it back on the intermediate housing, then apply the .2-.27 oz Yamaha recommends.

Your help is greatly appreciated Ernest...
