Default 2000 Yamaha XL 800 Pump rebuild

I am having bad cavitation, so I think it is time for a pump rebuild.
Do I just need to replace the impeller? Do I also need to replace the wair ring? How difficult is this to do?

Does any one have a schematic?

Where do i get a good price on the impeller?

Cavitation is very common problem on the XL 800. Part of problem is due to all the gaps and spaces in the pump. Many guys recommend installing a pump seal kit as a necessary upgrade even on new skis. You can get one here: YAMAHA XLL / XLT

The stock ski does not have a replaceable wear ring. The impeller housing is a single unit. You have to either buy a new OEM housing, an aftermarket housing, or an aftermarket housing that has a replaceable plastic ring (see this option on the site above). If you ride where there is lots of sand, etc., the plastic rings are a good choice, since they are only $35-50 versus $250 for a new OEM housing.

The replacement is pretty easy. You may need a special tool to remove the impeller, but it's cheap. I don't know if I have a service manual for your ski, and I'm out of town for a while. You should be able to find most all the info you need searching the web, and looking at parts diagrams.

Won't know if you need a new impeller until you get the new housing/ring and check clearance (less than 0.35 mm). Be sure to do the pump seal kit as mentioned above in addition to the new housing/ring.

Thanks for the information. How hard is it to install the pump kit?

Very easy. The kit is just a bunch of plastic pieces that fill in all the open spaces in the pump. You just apply some sealant and stick them in place (3M 4200 or 5200 is what is recommended).

Here is the instruction sheet: http://www.rivaracing.com/instructions/ry2519.pdf

I bought a kit and a new impeller. How difficult will this be to install?

About how long until it starts to show signs of wear? 6 months? a year?

20 hours? 40 hours?

Lets say in the salt water.

Is this something that should be replace regularly? Like an oil change?

I think you need to replace it when you are not getting grip. My Ski will not tow or get up on plane with 2 people on board, even though the motor is good. i think it wairs out if sand or rocks come in the pump.

Ok, so you will notice a loss of power down low? What about up top?

Just asking because im going to purchase a ski, and I want to know where and what to look for if the impeller/pump needs rebuilding. Can you check visually?

It's hard to see the impeller without removing the intake grate.
