Maybe contact your dealer and see if they have any tricks up their sleeves.

You have to reset the start code when you disconnect the battery, and if you are getting the display to light, but no "START" message that sounds exactly like that problem. Go carefully through the reset procedure again with the blue connector as described in the manual and enter a new code. Be sure the new battery is completely charged. It may take a couple of tries to get it right.

My buddy is having a similar problem with his except the display will not come on. Batt has 12.5v but nothing happens when you hold the mode button. He told me that he put the battery on charge while in the ski but he used the 6v setting on the charger. I would assume this damaged either the ecu or the display. Any ideas? Its on a 98 xl1200. Thanks
