Default HELP with a xl1200

My buddy has a 98 xl1200 that we cannot get the dash to energize. 12.5v @ battery terminals but nothing on display when holding the mode button. The battery went dead in the ski. He told me that he put the charger on it and he thought he had it on the 6v setting instead of 12v. I would assume that this damaged either the ecu or the display. The ski ran fine when put up last season. Any ideas?

I'd first try a completely different battery (pull a working one out of a vehicle). You might have 12.5 volts momentarily, but not enough amps to crank the ski. If it is a flooded type of battery, like the original one that came with the ski, they will not recover from a complete discharge......you will need a new one.

On some Yamaha skis the security system has to be reset if the battery dies or is disconnected. Check the owners manual, and it will tell you how to do the reset.

Be very careful jumping these skis. Yamaha does not recommend it....you can fry the electrical system. Best to jump from a pulled battery, or even better just connect to a known good battery.

The owners manual is a free download. Get it here: My Yamaha Prompt - Owners Manual

Check the fuse (location in the owners manual) you may have blown it with the jump. The manual shows the recommended way to jump the ski. Check for loose connections at the battery and the electrical box. Go to the section in the manual about resetting the PADLOCK system and carefully follow the instructions (be sure you have a known good battery connected when you reset the system), then try again NOT with a jumper system. You should hold down the mode button, and the system will ask for your code, then you should see START.

tried good gel battery from a different ski, fuse good. Also tried unhooking the blue connector for the code reset. Still nothing when holding the mode button.

Try jumping the starter solenoid with the good battery hooked up (connect the 2 large leads). If it turns over when you jump the solenoid, I'd try disconnecting the display, and see if it will start with the display disconnected.
