Default Help with steering noise! 2002 XL700

Hey guys. I have a wierd noise when turning. It only happens when turning right I believe. It may be left, but it only happens in one direction. It sounds like a poping sound. I tried moving the nozzle manually, and it moves quietly.
It only makes noise when turning the handle bars.

Also, when I put the reverse lever in a certain position, the noise goes away?

Whats up with that?

Thanks!!

Bump to the top! Please help!

I just took the ski out for the first time today. It ran great, but I had to get it started with starting fluid since it sat for a few days. Is this normal?

Also, I noticed that I have to keep the handle bars slightly to the left to keep it striaght.
Its kind of out of alignment, comparing to a car..
Is there anyway I can fix this? Where to check?? Its kind of annoying keeping the handle bars like that.. Im going to take a closer look tomorrow.

Any help, or tips are appreciated. Ask for more details if you need to!

Very fast ski. 62mph 3 seater with two people on it(400lbs) in VERY choppy water. It was blowing 15mph today..

Thanks!

Its a pretty simple steering system with one cable from the steering column to the nozzle. You will have to uncover the front connector to the handle bars and trace the cable back to the nozzle to find the problem. I'm guessing that the housing has come loose someplace, the cable is broken, loose at the steering or nozzle end, etc.. No way to know without tracing it from one end to the other. At worst you may need a new cable. Its fairly easy to fix, but can be a pain to run it through the hull. I don't have a service manual for your ski, but if its like the 760 models its not complicated.

Hard starting may be the first sign of needing to clean the carbs. How long since the last cleaning/rebuild? I'd clean or rebuild the carbs. as a first step. You can install a primer system if it is still hard to start after you are sure the carbs. are in good working order.

Hey. I ended up getting that xl700 with the 1999 GP1200 non PV engine installed.
It came with the pump, and electronics. it even came with the guage cluster that has speedo, gas, and oil levels. It even has a passcode. The xl700s only came with an oil light I believe.

He TOLD me the install was about 6 months ago. Guage reads ~72 hours.
Compression was 110 across the board. Identical.

I think a primer kit would really, really help. Ski runs great. Would it run good if the carbs needed cleaning? It was rough as heck, and I still hit 62mph with two persons..

I think ill have a better understanding once I take a look at it.

I guess ill just have to keep a can of starter fluid handy..

Alright, I inspected the nozzle and steering today.
I put the nozzle in the center manually, and the handle bars match up well, so whats else could be causing me to have to keep the bars to the left?
Could it be those crappy little stock sponsons on the xl700?

Also, about the reverse lever. Is there anyway I can adjust the lever postition?
I think when the lever is all the way down, it pulls it a little too far and make that noise with the steering. I have to keep it a tad above the flush line to keep it at the perfect position. If that makes any sense..

I found this out by closing the reverse latch manually by the nozzle, then sliding it back up, then I see that the lever isnt even all the way down. So I want to get it back in that same position, then just loosen the lever(if possible), and set it to the correct position..

Also, it is VERY hard to push the lever back into foward.. I almost feel as if the lever is going to break..

It opens and closes really easy manually when I do it by hand..

Any ideas?

Thanks!
