hey everyone i just purchased a 1987 wr500 i picked it up real cheap and just want to get it running and flip it for cash to rebuild the top end on my newer ski, the guy i purchased it from said the cdi box is bad, now running i know there only valued around 500 so to buy a new cdi at 350ish isnt realistic. but i dont know how mechanically inclined the guy is, i just got the wiring diagram for this ski but i need to know how to check the stator, the cdi coil etc, i havnt turned it over to check anything yet, what am i looking for as far as voltages,ohms, i was told the stator send out a/c voltage and the cdi converts to dc and stabilizes the voltage any help is greatly appreciated, and if i find its bad if anyone has a cdi cheap i would be interested it has the 6k8-10 i read the 11 would fit if the coil was also replaced thanks everyone

I'd recommend you get a cheap service manual. It will have all the specs for checking out the stator. Ebay always has them. Seems like the output voltage is something like 30-50 volts AC, but it varies by rpm, so I don't remember all the specifics. Ebay is also your best bet for finding a used CDI.

yea ive called all local boating stores barnes and noble etc nobody has a clymers or chilton available locally i was hoping someone had the same problem and could help thanks again

You can modify these easily and cheaply folks, as an ex electronics guy i have found the fix, the problem with most 500, 650 and some others is that the CDI box has a rev limiter, you can order a CDI through jaycar electronics $50 AUD, or you can order a high performance CDI off ebay.

The CDI off jaycar works like a dream, beware though the main diode coming off the charge coil may blow so replace with a 40volt 3 amp schotsky diode parallel with the 5804 diode.

Be warned though, this thing now flies but you need to limit the revs otherwise your head will blow.
