Default Rebuilding 99 XL1200 ltd

Okay, so my ski was running like it had a fouled plug, i pulled the head off to find cylinder #2 had a battered look and there was a V shaped chunk missing from the exhaust side, I have purchased a new cylinder and all the necessary parts, my questions is what could have cause this problem? My first instinct was the piston ring spun around and hit an exhaust port. Now that I am about to put the ski back together I am nervous that it may of starved for oil or could be something else and the last thing I want to do is drop $600 into a ski for it to blow again.
I'm nervous because im not completely sold that I have fixed the problem like other guys on here who know right away when an oil line has popped off.
Any help or tips on what caused this, i know oil lines popping off is common but I'm not exactly sure on the location of those as this is my first ski and it blew up after I owned it for 2 hours, ran like a raped ape for those two hours but hey thats life any help is much appreciated!!
thanks again

if your gonna spen 600 dollars to rebuild it, you might as well spend the extra money on going through every thing. then you wont have anything to worry about.

Yeah That's what im thinking, people on this forum are always saying to tighten the oil lines but never say what is being used to tighten those down, I cant seem to find a hose clamp anywhere that tightens small enough

after the engine is blown going through the carbs is pretty standard, may as well pull the reed cages while you have everything off. just saying, since you dont know what caused the cylinder failure in the first place.
that just me. i like sleeping good at night.
