Cool 89 wr500 fuel issue

Here's a stumper. This old ski runs like a scalded dog as long as you find the sweet-spot on the fuel selector switch where it is almost on the off position. We tried bypassing the switch where the primary tank was feeding the carb, and then we joined the primary and reserve pickups together with a T straight to the carb and in both instances, we could not get the ski to run more than half speed at WOT. The fuel filter has been replaced twice. My thought process is fuel tank vent check may be blocked and the sweet spot on the switch may actually be allowing a little venting to occur, but ???? The thing runs great. Any ideas???

o.k, if it always has done this then it is the CDI box, these things are rev limited so no matter what you do anything more than 1/3 of throttle and it starts to stutter (rev limited), now run the ski and look into the carbie throat, rev it up, if you see fuel dumped from the throat then all is good, if not then you have a carbie problem.

Now sometimes the air vents on the carbie get clogged, these vents allow the diagphrams to move back and forth, mark all the bits so you know which way to put it back together, the air vents are on the outer rim holes, gently poke a 3mm rod into it to clear the vents.
