Default Engine overheat indicator

I have a 2005 Yamaha FX Cruiser HO. The engine overheat indicator alarm sounds when I start the watercraft. It runs fine and I am getting cooling discharge. I am getting a 01 code that everything is fine. What could be the problem?

You might want to take the thermostat out and check it. Over time debris can build up around it just enough to limit water flow, or clog up the thermostat. Its pretty easy to remove and check.

Its right next to the oil tank on the cooling water line:

There are 2 thermoswitches on this model. One on the engine and one on the exhaust. Which one do you need to replace? The one on the exhaust is pretty easy to get to, but the one on the engine is just above the starter and could be more of a challenge to remove without removing other stuff first.

Thanks Ernest T. for your reply! I believe it's the thermo switch on the exhaust. Can you show me where it is located and how I can change it please?

Its on the top of the exhaust pipe, in the area right above the oil filter. It should be held in with 2 small bolts:

Thank you! If this does not work, what could be the cause of the engine temp warning beeping? I already changed the thermostat.

When the engine is running do you see water coming out of the port side overflow? How long after you start the engine does the warning buzzer sound? Do you see a code displayed when the warning goes off? If no code is shown, try holding down the button (or if you have the cruiser model the two buttons) on the left side of the display for at least 8 seconds to bring up a code. Don't push the button until the warning buzzer goes off.
