Default Cost of rebuilding upper end on Yamaha XLT 800

Can anyone tell me the approximate cost I might be looking at if I have to rebuildthe upper end of a Yamaha XLT 800 and whether this is something I could do myself (are there any specialty tools needed)?

It's all tied in to the recent "Loss of Speed & Power" & "Power Valve" posts on this page.

Default Yes!

It is something you absolutely can do yourself. I just did an xl1200 with no prior experience and it turned out perfect. The rebuild kit I bought cost me like 320, but you have one less cylinder so one less piston, it should be considerably less. If your cylinder is scored or tore up and needs replaced, that will cost you more, maybe 200-250 if your core is good for an exchange. Take your time and use the vast amount of info that's available online. And ask questions. You will need a good socket set, metric, like sizes 10mm through 15mm, prob an extension, and a torque wrench. Make sure you put the piston rings on right, there is a mark for which side goes up and it's really important. Good luck.

Im in process of doing my 800 now. I'm contemplating on doing a whole top end and cylinder swap or just pistons and rings. And still looking for the best place to purchase from.
