2007FXHOyama

I recently bought a 2007 FX HO (160hp) yamaha with 25 hours on the gauge. It looked great inside the engine compartment and idled just fine. On the very first test ride on the water, on 6k RPM the engine blew up, (Threw a rod) Block and Head were destroyed.
And Dealer asks up to $7,000 to fix it.


Does anyone know if it is common for this model?

Has anyone rode their FX HO yamaha for more than 30 hours without problem?

Is it worth fixing it or Am I better off selling it like it is?

My 2005 FXHO has over 230 hrs. on it with no issues at all..Just make sure to check the oil level periodically, after it gets warm of course...sounds like it wasnt taken care of very well and sat for a long time with no maintainance.. I dont know what you have into your 2007, so i couldnt advise as to replace the engine or just to dump it as is....Good Luck>>>

I've got over 200 hours on my 08 FX HO, and I have 2 friends with over 300 hours on theirs. Very rare for that engine to blow, but I do know of a couple of other cases that have been posted on the internet. Any engine that turns at 10000 rpms that is a possibility.

One theory that I've heard from a guy that works on these engines, is that if this engine is even slightly overfilled with oil, it can create excessive pressure that can cause a rod to fail. He told me that in this case it is usually one of the rear 2 cylinders that fail.

You would be crazy to repair it, since you can find really nice used FXHO skis for less than $7000 in good running condition. Maybe you can find someone with a trashed hull that would be willing to sell the engine for cheap.

Well Thats not the case with me, On my jet ski the front cylinder rod flew out not the rear one. I have no clue of the previous history of this jetski because I just bought from craigslist. the hull looks brand new and the exterior.

I wonder if it could have had a rebuilt engine in it? There are several reported problems with the rebuilt engines throwing rods.

with the help of this forum (especially Ernest T; thanks again!) i bought my first jet ski last april.
2006 FX HO. i love this ski. it's so easy to maintain. on the water our whole family has a blast. 60mph is more then enough for us. ocean is no problem for this beast.
back to the engine part. i had no problems at all. i bought the ski with 100hr on it and it has now 155 hr on it. the fx ho forgave a lot of my beginner mistakes.

it's mostly not a good sign when the ski has low hours on. 25hrs in 4-5 years....oh boy.
i saw a lot of fx ho's before i bought my ski and mostly the ones with low hour looked nice outside, but bad inside.

btw, i bought from craigslist too, but i had a mechanic to do a pre-purchase engine check he also did a water test for me.
