Default 1997 RA760 waveraider Smoking Problem

I have heard it all before,
Yes its a 2 stroke , yes it does smoke out of water, I purchased this 2 weeks ago and have not taken to the river as yet.
Not game enough as yet as I think she might stop on me.
Paranoid? Maybe.
She has done only 103 hours , motor looks very clean , always flushed ( so she ( seller ) told me so ).
I have cleaned the whole jetski out, changed the Primer ( gas ), changed the spark plugs ( were black internally but gaps were ok. )
Opened carby out looked very clean , pictures are attached.

Noticed heavy oil deposits on the ride plate , the air intake ( 2 on the right hand side seemed black ) . So I removed rideplate, cleaned it , then did some fault finding. I found that the BILGE nossle was very loose , oil was sitting in behind it. So I tightened it and replaced the hose.
Why would the BILGE hose if that is what it is have oil? I thought it was for pumping water out, or maybe the earlier models forced oil through it!

How would you tell if the pistons have had it?
Or the oil rings?
She starts first time everytime.
Though since clean out I have not started it to see if oil is still exiting as it used too.

I have attached some pics of stuff, please help.

I'll try to help with some questions, although I'm not real familiar with that model

1. I believe that unit has a siphon type of bilge system, and not an electric pump. Any fluid in the bottom of the hull will get pulled into the system when the engine is running, including spilled or leaking oil. Its pretty common to see some oil in the bottom of the hull from various sources.

2. On any 2 stroke ski you should always do a compression test. This is the best way to determine the health of the top end besides riding the ski. On that engine compression numbers should be around 140 psi per cylinder under ideal conditions. The 2 cylinders should be within 10% of each other. If you get a low number on the compression test, put a couple of drops of oil into the low cylinder and test again. If the compression increases, then you are usually looking at a problem with the piston rings or cylinder wear.

3. These models will normally smoke some at idle, and that should clear up as you ride the ski.

4. Only real way to check it out is to ride it. That tells you more about the health of the engine and pump than anything else you can do. You want to make sure it will hit the proper rpms and top speed on the water, and that it accelerates quickly (that ensures the pump is OK).

Good Luck!

Ernest,
You have been a great help indeed.
I purchased a compression tester, tested both cylinders, both came up 2 marks after 150psi, I take it = 160 psi each.

So I cleaned hull , and tightened all hoses but could not get to the hose directly in the engine ( my guess is that is leaking mildly ).
Siphon is floor mounted no pump. was very oily, cleaned it.

My guess is also Pump must be playing, So I have ordered a pump block.

Tomorrow will be taking it out on the lake and testing it. ( I am in Australia , spring time! )

Much appreciated.

dont worry about the smoking problem. my waveraider 700 does the same thing it fills my back yard with smoke when i run it on the hose. waveraiders are notorious for smoking very badly. run it in the water and even then it'll smoke some.

Thanks for the onfo.
I took it to the river over the weekend and noticed she hesitated on acceleration, but then flew after a mild spot.
She reached 80 klms per hour no problem.
After I cleaned her out , I took spark plugs out and noticed were gaped incorrectly, so I gap them accordingly.
She should go well this weekend.

Thanks guys.
