Default 2007 FX HO - Start or do not start in the Winter

Hi Guys,

i stored my ski in an unheated garage during the winter and was thinking of starting the ski few times a month for 15 secs(no water running) is that a bad idea ? some people don't recommend it as it may cause condensation but should starting actually help as it lubricates the engine and moves the gas through the injectors ?

I know some guys that do the same starting the ski every month or so and they don't seem to have any problems, but I suspect that they are doing a little bit of damage to their engines over the course of months.

My personal opinion is that you are better off running some fuel stabilizer through the system, then fogging the engine once at the start of winter, then forget about it until the spring. My reason is exactly, what you mentioned: you start a cold ski and let it warm up just enough to form some condensation in the exhaust system. There will always be an open exhaust valve on the MR1 engine. The condensation causes your valves and piston rings to rust..............very common finding on this engine on skis that were not winterized properly.

The other reason is that it is so easy to fog the engine on that ski, that a cave man could do it in 5 minutes.

i neglected winterizing this season and for the stabilizer to work properly i guess you need the engine running for few minutes and since its below freezing point i cant hookup the water hose so im basically trying to figure out which is less damaging not have it winterised or start it periodically.

I would pull the plugs out and spray a bit of fogging oil in the jugs, then replace the plugs and bump the starter enough to just move the pistons but not start it. Then add stabilizer to the tank and rock it back and forth on the trailer to mix it. You know now it is a myth to fill the tank for winter storage because of Ethanol fuel. All your doing is adding more fuel that could go through Phase separation after 30 days and get water in your tank. But check with Ernest he knows more than I.

+1 on what Outlaw said, but with your FXHO the air intakes offer a direct route to get fogging oil into the system without removing the plugs, so here is a really easy solution:
1. Start the engine and rev it up a few times to blow any excess water out of the exhaust system. Don't run it more than 15 seconds. Wait 2-3 hours and repeat.
2. When the engine is cool again, remove the air box lid and the air filter. Start the engine again and spray fogging oil in to the 4 intake openings through the ribbon assembly while the engine is running. Spray for about 3-4 seconds into each opening but don't run the engine longer than 15 seconds. Put the filter and box lid back on and your done until the spring.

Not a bad idea to pull the battery and put it on a trickle charger, or charge it every month or so.
