1989 yamaha waverunner no spark please help!!!

I just bought a 1989 yamaha wave runner 500, the person I bought it from said it had no spark I unhooked the safty stop and it fired up and died right away a couple times and nowthere is no spark again, I only know a little about waverunners. I have oppened the water proof box that contains the ingition coil and the CDI box, I have ohmed the wires out to the ignition coil I have 1 ohm to the primary and 5k between the plug wires, I have also checked the charge coil between the brown and white with black stripe wire I have 92ohms, and the pulser coil between the white with red stripe and black wire I have 98ohms, does this sound right and what else can I do to trouble shoot this problem? does any body know what the resistance is supposed to be for the charge, pulser, lightning, and ignition coil. and what collor are the wires I need to check? was I right??? please help

I have a 1989 Waverunner that has a spark, but it's really weak. Is there some way I can trouble shot this problem as well?

Same issue

Hi there,

I'm running into the same type of issue...had spark one day and the next it was gone. Not too sure what went wrong...been testing out different things but nothing has changed the problem.

I'd be interested in getting a copy of the electrical checks too if thats possible. Can it only be faxed or is e-mail possible?

Thanks for any and all help,

Alex

Thanks Peter for the fax...everything checked out and surprisingly after hooking it all back up we have spark again! Not to sure what happened or why since we didn't do anything special so maybe a loose connection?

However we still cannot get the damn thing to start. I checked the spark with one of those inline ignition testers (basically just house a small light bulb) and the light produced is very very dim. How would I verify if I have "weak spark" and is there any electrical test I can complete while the engine is cranking to verify condition of spark, voltage?

I took the intake manifold off to check reed valves which are in perfect shape so the next thing would be a clean (or maybe rebuild) of the carb. Going to check cylinder compression tonight but I'm pretty certain its fine.

I did get the engine to fire maybe 4 times in total and puff out a little smoke but nothign else which is why I was thinking "weak" spark causing poor ignition.

Anyway thanks for any and all advice!

Alex
