Default Dealer says i sank it

The wife was riding the ski and it quit. We took it to the dealer because we only had for three months to find out why it wouldn't start. After a few weeks I finally got a call to come to the dealer so they could show me the problem. Appearently enough water got into the engine through the exhaust to cause a valve to get bent and ruin the engine.

They say that the only way this happens is that the back of the ski goes under water or sinks. It never sank, so my question is, could the water box failed and some how allowed water into the engine? We babied this ski because we are new to the PWC crowd and I don't understand how this happens.

Thank you for taking the time to answer.

What model ski and how many hours? Most common entry points for water ingestion on a running ski are a blown head or exhaust gasket (rare for a new ski). Water is normally in the water box and is far enough from the engine as to not be potential source. Other causes are sinking the ski (includes flipping it over for some models), improper flushing, or improper towing of the ski.

If the engine is running and in good mechanical condition, you can actually get a significant amount of water in the hull without any problem. The fact that your wife was riding the ski when it quit makes me think of a blown gasket. Other potential source would be that the ski quit for other reasons, then when you had it towed in you pushed water into the engine (unless the cooling water inlet is blocked off you can't tow safely above 5 mph). So the cause for the ski to quit, and the water ingestion could be separate problems.

Default Thanks for the response

The model is a 2006 yamaha wave runner fx cruiser. We had ridden it for about 4 hours and took a break for lunch. After lunch, 10 minutes into the ride it stalled and wouldn't start. The wife was on the other end of the lake and a good person pulled her to our campsite.

The dealer said that the water had been in the engine for a long time because of how bad the rust was. But everytime we put it up, we checked the oil and never saw the milky look.

This was a used ski from the dealer, they had just put a new crank in and rebuilt the engine before we baught it. It still had the factory warranty on it with 110 hours.

Now I have to buy a new motor for it because this problem isn't under warranty.

any thoughts?

Well.....that is terrible track record for what has been called "The most reliable ski on the planet" sheesh a new crank and rebuilt motor before you buy it at 110 hours! Now for some reason it is time to do it again ??? Ouch thats substandard and doens't bode well for Yamaha. I think I would want an explaination on how this was your fault, if the DEALER is saying the water had been in there sometime considering the rust. If you just bought it how did it corrode that fast??? Sounds like a BS story from a dealer who doesn't want to warranty his product. maybe it is time to leave the dark side and come to Seadoo...

Heck my highly modified and supercharged 2006 Seadoo RXT w/93 hours has a better track record than that

Yea everything sounds fishy about that story. If water had been in the engine for a long time, there is no way it would have been running. I think you got sold a ski that had been previously trashed, the dealer got it fixed up enough to run, and then dumped it on you.

Before everyone starts bashing yamaha or the dealer--let's try to find out what happened-- your wife was riding and it quit running and she was towed across the lake by someone. Did you or the dealer try to start it after the tow without pulling the plugs to see if water was inside one of the cylinders from towing it over 5mph?

That's what I think happened! You towed it too fast and pumped the motor full of water, shoved it on the trailer and was done with it

Then please explain the ADVANCED internal corrosion if they just submerged it
