Default Engine question

I have a 1999 yamaha xl 1200 ltd and found that there is a hole I. The side of the engine. My question is, can I put a non powervalve engine in place of one with powervalves? There is qhite a difference in cost so I would like to weigh the options.

Are you sure your 99 has the power valve motor? I thought they came out in the 2000 GP1200r. Anyways the non PV has completely different exhaust routing than the PV 1200 motor. Not worth the hassle to save a few hundred bucks in my opinion. Plus you'll lose 20 HP.

Pic of the hole in the crankcase

Is this a powervalve engine? I'm new to pwc's, I really only know about aircraft so any help is much appreciated.

Yes that is a Powervalve engine. Try pwcengine.com, they are cheaper and better than SBT.

I'm pretty sure that 1998 was the first year Yamaha produced a powervalve engine and it was on the GP800. The first year they added them to the 3 cylinder engines was 1999 with your XL1200.

Agree with YamaDoo, may be more hassle than its worth to try to go with a non-PV engine.

I'm guessing that right above the exhaust ports are the actual power valves?
